Are You Ready for Change?

{flickr photo by: Injas World}

I thought I was. I never meant to sit on my high horse (in this case, a second-hand office chair) and tell you to face fear and gear up for positive change if I didn’t believe I could do it. I said it because I had walked that path myself.

But there’s something I failed to mention and something I forgot about.

The more challenges we climb through, the bigger and scarier the ones following it (and there will always be more difficult challenges along the way). Life does not get easier.

I took for granted that every struggle and crisis I have endured were only stepping stones, baby steps to the life I wanted.

Practice Makes Perfect?

In theory, the more you practice something, the better you are at it. But when it comes to following your dreams, it doesn’t matter how much time you spend reading, studying and preparing for change. What matters is your commitment to it.

The more you practice at facing your fears, the more fears you are able to face. But that doesn’t mean the road ever gets easy.

The Dream That Almost Came True

I think enough time has passed for me to write this…

A few weeks ago, I got an email that changed my life.

A staff member from the Oprah show contacted me about a question I had asked on the website. Let me back up a bit.

I am a long-time, huge fan of Oprah and her show. My dream to attend the Oprah show has been pasted on my vision board for years. And I actually got to see her in person at the OYou! magazine conference in San Francisco a few years ago. I have been trying to get tickets for her show forever. And now with the show ending, I knew that chance was pretty slim.

In desperation, I began answering questions from their call-outs to viewers who wanted to be on the show.

Imagine my excitement when I got that email from someone from the show saying they were interested in my question. And then the thrill of that person calling me to let me know that I might be Skyping with Oprah and the producers for an upcoming Behind the Scenes show.

I should have been over the moon with happiness. It was my chance to finally talk to Oprah. But do you know what happened? Surprisingly, I felt a cloud of dread hover over me. I was so sick to my stomach in fear that I almost wished that it didn’t happen at all.

The anxiety of having a dream come true was so overwhelming that I started to wish that I was never chosen.

And do you know what happened next?

I didn’t get picked.

I was so disappointed that I started to beat myself up about it. It was just a simple question that I had to ask. It probably wouldn’t take more than 3 minutes. I couldn’t believe I was willing to give up a dream because of my fear. I vowed that given another opportunity, I wouldn’t chicken out and let the chance slip through my fingers.

Can you guess what happened next?

You guessed it. I was asked to potentially be on the show again. That was a few weeks ago. I don’t know if I will be on the show. But the experience taught me a valuable lesson.

I too, have dreams that I still would love to fulfill. But in order to receive the gifts that those dreams would bring, I have to face the fears and obstacles that require me to get them.

I know it’s a simple thing to understand, dear friends. But it’s one that I realized must be learned in practice and not in theory.

Part of that journey involves a letting go. For me, it was letting go of the idea that I couldn’t do it, that I wouldn’t be able to control what happened. I needed faith that I wouldn’t stumble over my words or mess up my question or that if I had, I would still be living my dream. I needed to let go of the idea of perfection and embrace the opportunity I was being given.

How about you? Have you been given an opportunity recently, but are afraid of the change it will bring? What do you need to let go of in your life to make that dream a reality?

When You’re Feeling Uninspired

Life is wonderful and exciting. And behind every turn, there is a wealth of magic and possibility.

But that could sound like crap to you right now.

As sappy as one of those greeting cards that make you gag when you see them.

So maybe you’re not there yet.

Maybe you’re not even close.

But that’s okay. I’ve been there lots of times. And feeling blah, uninspired and unmotivated are normal and can actually be helpful.

Here are few things I learned that lead to a life uninspired. Read it for tips on how to pull yourself out of the trenches and back on that path to an inspired life:

1. Loss of connection.

We’re so “connected” these days. Yet, we’re probably cozying up with our computer more than we’re spending time with our “real” friends and ourselves.

It’s so easy to get lost in tweets, updates and chatting online that we start to neglect the real emotional connections in our lives.

When I’m feeling uninspired, it’s usually because I’m experiencing some type of disconnection. And it’s not social connection, but a spiritual one. When I’ve stopped seeing synchronistic events it’s a sign that I need to start getting back in touch with myself. Meditation, prayer can help. But so can journal writing and just sitting in breathing for 5 minutes.

Ask yourself how you are feeling right now? What thoughts, emotions or beliefs have you been avoiding or denying? Take time to get back in touch with what’s going on with you and see if you’re feelings of disconnection is the cause of you feeling uninspired.

2. You’re doing too much.

Oh life as an entrepreneur/work at home mom/writer/designer, etc is so easy right? In reality, anything we do these days is too much. If I wanted to, I could work every day and night and weekends and still not get to the to-do list piled up on the side of my bed. As it stands, I have over 20 books I’d love to read, three ideas for essays in my head and a few long feature articles that are due by the end of the month.

But no matter how easy it is to get lost in all of our work, it’s so important to resist the urge to give in.

The obvious fact is that there will always be more to do tomorrow, but at the end of our lives we’re not going to think about how much we finished on our to-do lists, but how well we lived. Think about how important it is to finish those tasks. If you never get to them, how much would it affect your quality of life. Then, prioritize according to your answer.

3. Feeling unfulfilled.

I think emotions are a good thing. Even the negative ones. Why? Because they provide hints to where we are in our lives.

Maybe the reason why you’re feeling uninspired is you’re doing things that don’t fill you up.

Maybe the job/relationship you have used to serve you, but you’ve gotten to a point where things feel stagnant. Maybe you need to come up with new ways to make things more interesting. Say you broach a new idea to your boss/client that will help flex your creative muscle or you talk to your partner about going on a trip or discuss what’s been bothering you. Try doing something different to and it will help you grow as a person.

If you’ve made the effort to grow and challenge yourself and the career or relationships around you are not giving you the freedom to do so, you may want to consider moving on to more fertile ground.

Are you feeling uninspired now? Or have you felt that way in the past? What helped pull you out of blahville and back into a purpose driven life?

You Want Love, Happiness, Success?

Be prepared for the hard work.

Do you remember when you were 7 and played pretend? You imagined you were a model, teacher, scientist or in my case all of the above plus being a cashier?

Wasn’t it fun to sit back and dream up anything you ever wanted and truly believe tomorrow it could all unravel in your lap like it was your birthday?

That was then. This is now.

Although theories taught by “The Secret” and the Law of Attraction may teach you otherwise, the truth is you must always be ready to sacrifice something for the good stuff.

The Sweet Treats You Want in Life

Signs You’re Not Living Your Purpose

I know someone who’s been doing the same job for almost 20 years, but recently told me he’s never felt like he was on the right track.

Hopefully, that’s not you.

Hopefully, you don’t have to spend two decades walking in one direction before you stop to realize that you have been on the wrong one.

Here are a few signs taken from the Callings talk I went to a few weeks ago. {Yep, I’m still reaping benefit from that event.}

Signs You’re On the Wrong Path

1. You spend much of your days thinking, planning and studying about your dreams.

That sounds like a good thing right? All that preparation means you’re going somewhere.

In reality, you could be stalling. If you find yourself signing up for webinars, classes, booking consultants and experts to help you, you may be unconsciously keeping yourself busy so you don’t have time to take action and start pursuing your dreams. You may be waiting for the perfect moment to do A, B, or C. But there really is no perfect time.

2. You choose a path that’s parallel to the one you’re called towards.

You’re an editor, for example, who really wants to write for a living. Or you work in a bookstore instead of writing a book. You may be a seamstress who dreams of being a fashion designer. Or an art buyer rather than an artist. Think about what you do for a living. Could you be slightly off track? Are you in a job where you are watching those you want to be like succeed while safely standing out of the limelight?

3. You’re a workaholic.

People who spend all of their waking hours working or worried about work may be doing so because it feels safer than thinking about what they really want to do in life, but aren’t doing. Being a workaholic is a great distraction, a way to keep yourself busy that you don’t have time to pay attention to what really needs your attention. This could be your kids. This could be the book you’ve always wanted to write.

If any of these sounds like you, take heart.

There are a few things you can do:

  • Start easy. If you’re thinking of starting a business or trying out a new creative venture, start by surrounding yourself with positive, supportive people. Begin with easy customers, not tough ones. This means you shouldn’t ask your cynical uncle what he thinks about your plans to open up a new craft business or your pessimistic pal about your latest design idea. Find people who are optimistic and supportive. You will need them especially to have the courage to go through the long haul to get to your dreams.
  • Take small steps. Because the road to following your calling feels so scary, it’s important to take small steps so you don’t overwhelm yourself at the beginning. Just quitting that day job or calling potential clients can be enough to make you want to give up. So start small. Make weekly, monthly even daily goals for yourself that look like this: 1) create a list of potential clients to contact 2) buy file folders and a new notebook to keep track of all of your expenses and potential projects/ideas 3) set up a website 4) contact 1 customer/client.
  • Form a community to help you. No one becomes successful by doing things on their own. You can hire a designer to help you design your web page or find a mentor to give you advice and encouragement to follow your path. Ask your relative who is an entrepreneur how they got started. Or contact a Twitter or Facebook friend and ask if they can give you some tips.
