Where the Answers Are

{flickr photo}

I spent the long holiday weekend in Georgia where my husband and I had one adventure after another. We saw alligators, hiked through the sweltering heat, and biked in a downpour. But of everything we saw, witnessed, and adored, it was a single activity that brought me back to peace. And why Georgia’s still on my mind.

It was a labyrinth on a farm that got me to where the answers are. Beneath the haven of a green Georgia tree, there was a rock labyrinth. It was bigger than the one we walked in Sedona. But just as beautiful. Without word, we went straight toward it. And like a record player, followed the grooves, falling deeper and deeper into a sense of peace.

When you’re busy moving through life, you forget the little things.  When you’re on your iPhone, you don’t feel the breeze on your face. You don’t hear the birds chirping out the window. You don’t give yourself enough time, space or silence before you fill it with busyness. And that’s a shame. Because under that tree, walking upon the earth, you’ll find the answers that you’ve been searching for.

There’s something about walking slowly that awakens the spirit. It’s the feeling of the ground upon your feet, the pause between steps, that makes every step feel intentional, with purpose, instead of towards a single goal.

But it is also the labyrinth itself that has a way of telling the story of your life. As my husband and I…

A Collage of Gratitude

I don’t think you could do enough posts on gratitude. Really.

Without gratitude, I could easily slink away into the cracks and crevices of an imperfect life without ever noticing the beautiful already perfect world around me.

Without gratitude, my mind might try to “Re-Mind” me of ways I’m not living up to the person next door.

Without gratitude, I might slide into a permanent attitude of unfairness and “poor me syndrome.”

Without gratitude, I would perceive everything through a dark narrow lens where the shadows are always on my side.

And with Thanksgiving coming up, I can’t afford to do that. I don’t have an unlimited amount of days to use up. So I choose to be grateful instead.

In honor of the upcoming holiday, I decided to create a collage of all the wonderful things in this world that I have to be grateful for. This one requires no text. My posts are text heavy as it is.

I hope you enjoy it and that it inspires you to create your own collage of gratitude. If you do decide to make one, leave a link in the comments. I’d love to see them.

Reinventing Creative Friday

There it goes. Another week long gone. I’m happy to say I survived a cold, a new column launch, copywriting projects, my “day job” and a sprinkle of emails and social media connections along the way.

But we’re barely into fall and I’m all autumn-ed out.

On weeks like this my writing brain needs a hiatus. That’s when I’m oh-so-grateful for soothing, no thinking required, visual stimulation.

Are you there too?

This is for you if you’re hungry for some eye candy and need a little

spark!

Sometimes I find it in the simple things like

raspberries.

or an unexpected strip of

nature.

A soft place to land my

laptop.

A ________ to dream about.

cottage.

A __________ to make me feel small and insignificant.

forest.

AND a _________ to remind me that imperfection is beautiful too.

flawed flower.

What would you fill the above blanks with?

*And when that’s not enough, I hop onto Pinterest.

A Short Note of Gratitude

Pinterest Photo

People often asks what inspires me. I could say the beauty of nature-the way the wind makes leaves dance, how raindrops capture the rays of sunshine in little perfect beads, or how animals in quiet ordinary moments seem to hold the key to all of humanity.

And then there are store windows, art pieces, live shows and things that humans made that fill me up with possibility.

But what really inspires me is hope and resiliency.

As one part of my job at Psych Central, I manage social media. It’s a lot more difficult than it sounds. But having the opportunity to connect with people there is so inspiring. When I read about a person’s struggle with mental illness or how they are seeking therapy so that they can become a better person for themselves and their family, it makes me weep.

That type of courage to overcome what most of us would hide from is inspiring.

It’s what makes me want to keep getting better in my own life.

It’s what makes me want to keep doing what I do.

I also feel inspired by you. The you who remind me of me when I was calling out for hope. Someone who had big dreams, but didn’t believe they were possible.

I’m finally beginning to realize that if you only listen to your inner voice-the child who had dreams without fear-and continue to listen to it, despite doubt, despite what your family says, regardless of who wags their finger at you and makes you feel ashamed for what you want to do, then you will get there.

The clouds have started to dissipate and suddenly everything seems clear.

Just keep on following the path, dear friends, believe and you will eventually get there.

Friday Inspirations

{*Photo of what I packed for our train ride from Paris to London. I’ve got all I need here. Sunglasses, bottled water, an old and a new book, my iPod and a bag of chocolate covered ginger.}

Friday is for reviewing the week. Preparing for the weekend. Taking off layers of work clothes and sliding into something warm, cozy and free.

Oh don’t you love Fridays?!

The unwinding of too wounded up days. The looking forward to moments to linger, refresh and recharge for the upcoming week?

There is so much hope and inspiration for Fridays. So I’d love to end this week with a few things that are inspiring me:

1. The Funnies a.k.a. Martha Beck. If you’re not following her on Twitter of fanning her on Facebook, you’re missing out. She’s got the kind of stuff that’ll make you really laugh out loud. (Not just say LOL with a minor giggle.) She also has a knack for finding the most adorable videos. Check out this one, for example:

2. Nature envelops me. Who doesn’t love nature? I love being surrounded by trees and flowers and am inspired constantly when I’m around them. In fact, it’s my inspiration for my photography gallery on imagekind. Here’s a peak at one of my favorite flowers. {I sell a different version on my site for $10.44, but in general this red hot flower gives me goosebumps!}

3. A mug of something warm and sweet. I may be a sweetaholic. And when it’s nice and cold out like the weatherman’s predicting it’ll be, there’s just no better time to sip in moments of warmth and memories.

What about you? What inspires your inner creative soul to soar?
