4 Horrifying Outcomes of Not Pursuing Your Purpose

Many of us were brought up to believe that money was either a) the root of all evil b) it was a necessary evil.

As a result, our true purpose was buried underneath grown-up words like, “obligation” and “responsibility.” We had to undertake the role of being an adult which has no room for joy or the freedom that comes with pursuing something you love.

At first, working at a job that pays the bills doesn’t seem innocuous, but over time it can wear on your soul and be surprisingly insidious.

  1. It impacts your emotional well-being. The reason why I’m so passionate about helping others find and pursue their purpose is that I remember viscerally what it was like to work at a job that seemed perfect on paper, but was eating at my soul. Every day I begrudgingly went to my job. Every minute there was pure torture. I was angry and that anger turned into resentment and then depression. I felt stuck, trapped and hopeless. That’s what happens when you don’t listen to messages of your soul. You lose yourself.
  2. It impacts your physical health. It wasn’t just that one job that led me to feel stressed. Even as a freelance writer when I got the opportunity to finally live my dreams, I had clients that didn’t have clear boundaries. I often felt sick to my stomach. I couldn’t eat. I couldn’t relax even on vacation. When you don’t sleep or eat well, the stress can wreak havoc on your physical health. I regret not listening to my intuition. As a result, I live with several chronic illnesses. But I now know how vital it is to listen to yourself.
  3. It impacts your relationships. Everyone has had that toxic co-worker or knows the feeling of being in a relationship with someone who despises their job. It’s a toxic relationship that impedes growth and well-being. If you’re unhappy where you are, you’re probably taking out your unhappiness on others. Being in an environment that doesn’t serve you, will eventually end up hurting the relationships you do care about. Not writing, not creating, will make you obsess about other things. You will become a worrier, a critic, and feel like something is missing in your life. And you won’t have the time or energy to do the things that truly matters.
  4. It impacts your financial health. The funny thing about taking a job that doesn’t fulfill you is that your soul will be desperate for something to take the edge off. You’ll find yourself online shopping, for example, or taking trips you can’t afford, or drinking a little too much. We often try to escape the truth that we’re not living our life to the fullest. And that often means we’re hurting ourselves.

The good news is that at any moment of our lives we can change the path that we’re on.

We only need to recognize that we’ve been going the wrong way.

We only need to embrace our true purpose and have the courage to take steps leading to the dreams that are rightfully ours.

We were made to have the situation, experiences, and relationships that we had so that we could use those along with our innate talents to change the world in a positive way.

I don’t just see this as a hobby. I see this as a core reason why we’re unhappy, fighting with each other and harming the earth.

If everyone would understand that our sole purpose of being here is to love each other and use our gifts to help one another, we would be living in a different world.
