The One Thing Stopping You From Pursuing Your Dream

A shot of my son staring at his dream of jumping into the ocean.

There are a lot of things blocking you.

I bet you’re reading this and thinking how wrong this statement is and how much you’d like to prove it to me.

I know you’d like to tell me that finances are stopping you or the pandemic or you have too many interests or not enough experience.

I know these things because I’ve heard them from many people in my life including myself.

The truth is there is one single thing that blocks you from fulfilling your purpose that I guarantee is the real reason why you’ve stopped chasing it.

Unworthiness.

This seems sentimental or maybe even untrue to you. You like yourself. You’re aware of your talents. You’re doing things taking classes and reading books. But yet, you’re not moving forward.

Every time you’re scared it’s because there’s a little part of you that thinks you’re not good enough to do it.

It’s likely this started young with family or friends telling you that you could never pursue art because you’ll never make money. Or who do you think you are to believe you’re talented enough to do it?

You might be the first person in your family to do something different. Maybe your sister is a doctor or your brother is a lawyer. And all you want to do is CREATE.

That’s like standing with the wave behind you ready to get pounded by all the years of criticism, judgment and fear that you’re not good enough.

There are legitimate fears because for every artist or creative that’s made it, there are hundreds and thousands who didn’t.

It’s not easy to break down the walls of fear and insecurity of your gift. And that is what it is. A gift. But we easily give it away thinking we’re not worthy to use it.

It can become difficult to differentiate between your own voice and theirs that you convince yourself that what you’re doing or not doing is right.

That you’re saving yourself from heartache and your family and friends will support this belief.

Anyone who is living the same way will have your back. You do something different and you’re threatening their own sense of safety and security, and their beliefs about their own fears. This is why anytime you step out of the legacy of staying safe, you’ll be met with pushback so strong that it’ll keep you from stepping out again.

Unless of course, you’re guided by something stronger.

A powerful force that’s been whispering to you alongside the negative voices. And it sounds like this.

You were meant to do this.

You have everything you need.

You were made to be strong. And if you don’t use your strength to pursue this thing that you know you were built to do, a part of you will wither away.

You’ll never feel like you’ve lived your fullest life unless you at least try.

Sometimes you need support to nurture that side of you that’s scared. You need to tell yourself that what you create has no bearing on who you are as a person.

But that what you create matters.

It matters to those who get to see it and it allows you to finally express the gift that’s waiting for you to share it with the world.
