Summer When You’re a Mother

You’ve seen it all over Instagram and Facebook. All those memes about what summer does to mothers.

That’s life post-kids and in the midst of a pandemic.

There’s nothing like the heat and endless parenting hours in a day to fry your mommy brain and make you fantasize about pre-pandemic life when you didn’t have to worry about the newest viruses, inflation, fires in Europe and the state of the world today.

When I scroll through Facebook, we’re all trying to give ourselves a temporary vacation with food (especially sugar), European vacations and tips to make our lives easier. More tolerable.

Now that summer is nearly over, what now?

Before the pandemic, I spent a lot of time with moms in playdates, mommy groups, and as clients.

Motherhood can become this all-encompassing black hole where you lose yourself because a child by nature is an energy sucking vampire dressed as a puppy. You can’t help but want to placate them. You can’t help but read books and watch videos on the ways you could be parenting better.

The trouble is there’s no way to keep going that route without burning out.

All moms need something solely for themselves. If not, they’ll find a way through shopping or drinking or spa tripping. We’re not meant to be alive solely for our kids.

This is especially true in the world we’re living in. Never have I felt more called than in this moment. If we’ve been waiting for a time to use our skills to do something to benefit ourselves, our children and the world, well it’s now!

I know what you’re thinking. How can I possibly do anything when my brain is mush and the only time I have is in the wee hours in the morning when I should be sleeping?

I dare you to take note of all the time you spent scrolling and texting, and mindlessly googling late at night. How much of that time could be researching what you’re passionate about?

Right now you might be too spent to do your dream job and fulfill that purpose. But that doesn’t mean you can’t participate in the fantasy by writing it down now. You can start by doing just one thing.

One Thing To DO Right NOW

  • Swap out your scrolling mindlessly time and spend it doing at least one of the following: 1. Look up one thing you’re interested in. 2. Consider hiring a coach (Email me to see if I can help you) to direct you in the path you’re interested in. 3. Spend 5 minutes a day writing in a journal about the life you envision for yourself. 4. Do one nice thing just for you. 5. Use all of your senses to visualize a scene where you are truly at peace and happy. You could be rocking in a hammock or writing a book.

Try it and see if you feel a shift in your energy and well-being. Do this often enough and overtime it will become your reality.
