Inspiring Websites

These cold, winter days and heart-wrenching world news sometimes takes a toll, making faith and hope seem unattainable and impossible. Even as a writer writing this blog, I go through periods of self-doubt and uncertainty. That’s why finding inspirational websites and books are SO important to me! Here is my list of inspiring websites that make me ponder, “Why didn’t I think of that?”

  1. Beliefnet. The website that infuses religion and spirituality beautifully displays inspiring slideshows with quotes and articles that has a way of lifting my spirits and making me smile. Then, they came up with The Inspiration Report – a blog that does what I try to do here, inspire hope and optimism through uplifting stories. Read it and you’ll start craving a daily dose of good news.
  2. Tonic. The website that gives back. Inspiring articles and sustainable products make this one of my favorite sites to hang out in and one I wouldn’t mind writing for!
  3. Guideposts.  Similar to Beliefnet, Guideposts provides more inspiration and less religion. It provides a wealth of information and articles on everything from dealing with pet loss to tear jerking true stories.

What about you? Any site that you visit for your daily dose of inspiration? If so, share the love here.

Inspiring Links

I love to read about others inspiring stories and if you’ve found your way here, there’s a good chance you like reading them too. That’s why I decided to compile a list of sites that feature some of the best in heart warming, happy stories. It’ll lift you up during tough times and inspire you to spread your own joy in good. Happy Friday you all!

  • Guideposts: The people who publish Guideposts magazine continue to enlighten, inspire and give us the kind of stories that makes you want to do good and live better. Their stories motivate us through tough times and instill courage to help people to face every day challenges in their life.
  • Tonic: I recently found this site by chance and am so lucky I did! It’s the feel good news site that I’ve been waiting for. Tonic brings attention to stories that often go unnoticed like the bride who decided after being jilted at the altar, to donate her wedding reception hall. The lucky partiers? A bunch of surprised and happy senior citizens. Isn’t that a news story worth reporting?
  • Beliefnet.com: Okay, I admit it. I too, need inspiration. There are times when the going gets tough and when the tough gets going, I go to this site. Their gorgeous slideshows like, “10 Ways to Handle Change,” have helped lift my spirits and become a more positive person.
  • Oprah.com: How could I forget Oprah? Her shows never fail to inspire me. But her website also provides inspiration after the show is over. Articles like, “Become the Person You were Meant to Be: Where to Start,” has given me the courage to pursue my passions.

This is just a few of the sites that help inspire me. Do you have any favorites you’d like to share? I’d love to add them to my list!

Finding Inspiration in Books

You know the saying “it takes a village to raise a child”? Well I would also say that it takes a village to follow your dreams. There are a lot of people that helped motivate me to quit my mundane corporate job. Although I was passionate and ready, when the majority tells you to stay and fit in with society, going against the grain is difficult to say the least.

And though I am not receiving any Pulitzers anytime soon, I have done better than I expected in a surprisingly short period of time. For that I have a lot to be grateful for and a lot of people to thank. So if I was standing on the podium now, giving my, “I’d like to thank the Academy speech,” I’d start off by thanking my husband, my friends and family that support me, my coach Jaqui, fellow freelance writers and all the books that have pushed me from maybe to, “Yes, I can!”  I thought I’d leave a list of resources for those of you looking to take your own leap into dreamville.

  1. A great book for helping you find your dreams and then giving you the courage to follow them: Martha Beck, “Finding Your Own North Star: Claiming the Life You Were Meant to Live
  2. Helped me to discover what kind of artist I was and how that effects the best career for me. Great for other creatives out there: Carol Lloyd, “Creating a Life Worth Living-A Practical Course in Career Design for Artists, Innovators, and Others Aspiring to a Creative Life.”
  3. Strengthens your intuitive muscle: Thomas Moore, “A Life at Work-The Joy of Discovering What You Were Born to Do.”
  4. Helps you to create a plan to escape from the corporate jungle: Michelle Goodman, “The Anti 9 to 5 Guide-Practical Career Advice for Women Who Think Outside the Cube.”
  5. This book gave me hope that I can do it on my own, that there were others going through the same ups and downs as me and that we could all come out alive, happy and successful: Kristen Fischer, “Creative Self-Employed-How Writers and Artists Deal with Career Ups and Downs.”
  6. Absolutely loved this book. It was one of the first books I read about helping me rediscover my dream to be a writer: Barbara Sher, “I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was-How to Discover What You Really Want and How to Get It.”
  7. Great book for women entrepreneurs: Lauren Bacon & Emira Mears, “The Boss of You: Everything A Woman Needs to Know to Start, Run, and Maintain Her Own Business.”

Whew! That was a lot of books. I still have a whole bunch that I’m still reading. Stay tuned for more lists of great resources for creative dreamers like me.

Blissful Dream or Perfect Nightmare? You Get to Decide!

When my 9 to 5 is quickly putting me in humdrum mode, I dream about what I would do if I could do anything.  Sometimes I’m Carrie Bradshaw typing away on my Apple laptop and having lunches with friends and other times I envision working at a magazine.  Have you ever let your inner child loose too and imagined what it would be like if you could live the life of your wildest fantasies?

If you have, I bet you never thought that you could actually make that dream come true.  And I’m talking everything from a chocolatier to a TV Producer.  “If you dream it, they will come.”

There’s a company called, “Vocation Vacations” that let you test-drive your dream job for one to three days.  This way you can actually make your dreams come true, experience the job for yourself and in the eyes of a mentor and then decide if it’s still a fantasy or a nightmare.

The downside?  The price is a bit steep ranging from $549-1199.  However, this might be worth the investment if it saves you time and money and furthers your decision to follow your dreams.  Check out their website for more info.

Reach for Success

I subscribe to newsletters from “Green Career Central,” written by its founder Carol McClelland, PhD.  It’s a great resource for anyone looking into a new career and specifically for those on a hunt for an eco-friendly one.  In her recent newsletter she included a link to a video about the “8 Secrets of Success” by Richard St. John.  The video was so compelling that I decided to include it here.  If you’ve got 3 minutes, take a look see.  You may find answers to the questions you’re looking for.  I know I did!
